Help You Need After a Sports Injury

Guest post written for Tranquil Therapy around Sport injury.

Sports injuries can take a long time to heal, especially without proper care and medical attention. It can be hard to know exactly where to go for treatment for sports injuries, especially for less severe injuries, like sprains and pulled muscles. There are two main types of treatment to seek when it comes to sports injuries. The first is pain management, and the other is rehabilitation. Both types of treatment have their own uses and benefits.

    Go to a Massage Therapist

Massage therapy is a form of pain management treatment, though its benefits don’t end with just relaxing the muscles. Massage therapy can help reduce stress and anxiety, allowing the body to enter an extremely relaxed state. This reduces adrenaline production and can force the body’s sympathetic nervous system to slow down, letting the parasympathetic system take over. The meditative nature of massage has also been shown to help improve mental health.

    Visit a Physical Therapist

Physical therapy is more of a rehabilitative type of treatment. For more severe injuries, it might be necessary to keep the muscles active to prevent them from atrophying as well as perform strength exercises to help build up muscle strength and endurance. In the case of torn ligaments or pulls, it might also be necessary to retrain the body to help control motor functions and fine movements. If you’re unsure of where to go for physical therapy, there are resources you can use to find the best therapist in your area. You can visit medical review sites such as HealthGrades, which has over a million active users.

    Seek Out Referrals

In the case of more severe injuries like fractures, complete ligament or tendon detachments or severe muscle tears, you’ll likely need medical attention from a general practitioner or musculoskeletal surgeon if you need to have tendons reattached. Since these professionals work with sports injuries and other patients frequently, they can be a great source of information on good places to seek additional treatment during the recovery process and what to look for. Many of these doctors will write prescriptions for physical therapy treatment, which, oftentimes, allows insurance to slightly offset the cost.

Knowing what kind of treatment you need is only half the battle when on the road to recovery. Finding the right treatment during your recovery can ensure a smooth transition to getting back out on the field and doing what you love.
